Thinking of Renting a Mobile Steel Container?

At first glance, the idea of mobile steel containers seems to be ingenious. But there are some short comings that many people don't think about and are disappointed after the fact.

In reality, mobile storage units are used ship containers from merchandise shipped from other countries such as China. What they transported over the ocean, for often months at a time, are unknown but someone came up with the idea that they would be SAFE enough to use to store your belongings, because they have little use otherwise. Most times they are washed up and painted, made to look “as good as new”. When purchased for storage, the buyers of the containers do NOT know what was stored in them, or what may have been spilt in them.

They are uninsulated so in the summer they tend to act as an oven overheating your stored goods. Condensation tends to be a problem when the sun heats them up during the day and the cold air cools them off at night; this is especially a problem in the winter and spring. During the winter, because they are uninsulated, the temperature it is outside is the temperature it is inside.

The security of using mobile storage units is another potential problem. These units are not individually alarmed and are often stored on vacant pieces of property with virtually no security. There have been known mix-ups where the wrong containers were brought to the wrong destinations and containers have been misplaced or worse yet have gone missing.

Even when mobile storage containers are packed very carefully, there is definite instability and movement of the contents within the unit when it is either being pickup from one location and moved to another or just being moved around the storage yard. When using mobile containers as “on site storage” your container will be moved, often containers are being stacked 2-3 containers high. This also limits the access to your contents and requires additional planning on your part, if you need to access your contents. There in no guarantee that your contents will be safe and undamaged the next time you have access to them.
